Broward County Medical Association
October 20th, 2007
Nigel A. Spier MD FACOG

As I stand here this evening, I must admit that I feel a bit like the day I presented myself as a fourth year medical student for my first day of my OB/GYN rotation. I was the first to show up on the unit that morning and no sooner had I walked through the door, thanthe charge nurse rose up from behind the nursing station and greeted me with an urgent "Oh good! Are you one of the new students?" I answered yes and she promptly grabbed me by the sleeve and said "great, come with me!" She pulled me into one of the labor rooms where a woman who was having her fourth or fifth child was clearly crowning. The charge nurse threw a pair of gloves at me and said "Here, put these on!" I gave her a look that could have only conveyed sheer panic and that I had no idea what to do, at which point she looked straight at me and said "JUST DON'T DROP IT!"

Dr. Weston, Dr Altenburger, Mrs. Casareto, honored guests, friends and family; it is indeed an honor and privilege to stand before you this evening to accept this awesome responsibility. And although I have never done anything like this before, I am proud to say that thanks to the mentorship, support and inspiration of many of my friends and colleagues here tonight, I have at least had more than the requisite "see one/do one/teach one" indoctrination that is the staple of so much of our training as students and residents, and I look forward to assisting in the birth of some exciting new programs for the BCMA.

I would of course also like to thank my wife and family for putting up with my often unpredictable schedule of running out to deliver babies, as well as the slightly more predictable schedule of meetings and fundraisers. I would like to thank my in-laws who are here this evening, not only to share in this special occasion but also, as they so often do, as back up babysitter, chauffer and keepers of 'manageability'. I would of course, also like to thank my parents, who, although they could not be here, are always in my heart and who taught me that life is not just about making the right decisions, but also making the right decisions good.

I would also like to thank my amazing and wonderful office staff, who are here tonight, and who manage to always keep my patients and me smiling, and remind me to stay on time! Continue
